On Saturday 27th July 2013, Escapade joined revellers in Cumbria to coordinate the Guinness World Record attempt for The Largest Gathering Of People Dressed As Superman - and then smashed it!
WHAT CAME BEFORE
The Man of Steel has captured the hearts and minds of comic fans, film lovers & telly addicts for generations since his creation in the 1930s. Whether it's making a cape out of your new coat in the playground or actually getting your hands on a proper suit & cape, the chance to dress like the Last Son of Krypton is as exciting now as it has ever been - whatever your age.
It makes sense that, when the cape comes on, people feel the [super]power and want to achieve something special - and they have. Over the years, various people have attempted to claim the Guinness World Record for dressing as their favourite hero and, in June 2013, American retail company Sears gathered 566 of their employees to do exactly the... but that's Sears. We're Escapade. We ARE fancy dress.
WHAT CAME TO BE
With 2013 marking the 75th anniversary of the creation of Superman and with our relationship with the fancy dress themed music event Kendal Calling Festival being as strong as it already is, our mission was clear...
Faster than a speeding bullet, Escapade flew up to picturesque Cumbria armed with over 1,100 free Superman costumes, in all shapes & sizes, for an eager collection of festival goers who had signed up to participate after a whirlwind of excitement about the Guinness World Record attempt on Facebook & Twitter.
In the heat of the midday Summer sun on Saturday 27th July 2013 (the day of the festival's movie-themed attractions), the growing numbers filed into Kendal's 'Glow Tent' and the activities began. Backed by a selection of classic & current chart hits, the Supercrowd took part in competitions and games conducted from the stage including:
- youngest Superman award (10 months!)
- oldest Superman award (73!)
- male / female Superman posedown competitions
- crowdsurfing / flying race
- Supermen tug of war
- group dance-off to the 'Superman Song' by Black Lace
Finally, the time came for the big moment. Joined onstage by two official Guinness World Records adjudicators who kept count for 5 minutes (the time needed to qualify the attempt), the announcement came that we had not just been successful but WAY exceeded the last record's number of 566 - with 867 people dressed as Superman present, we broke the previous Guinness World Record by over 150%!
Celebrations were also in order given that the day of the event was also Escapade's own CEO Bhupendra Maisuria 44th birthday who, keen to make a day of it, decided to double the amount received for Help For Heroes on the day and bringing it up to an amazing £1,000.66.

WHAT'S YET TO COME
We at Escapade would like to thank all of the superheroes to took part in making a bit of history, providing well needed funds for a worthy charity and bringing yet another world record safely into British hands, but as with every good superhero story - this is not the end.
What now? With this under our belts, like Superman himself we could do almost anything. Ever wondered what it would feel like to be part of the world's biggest chorus of people singing the Batman theme tune... ALL DRESSED AS BATMAN?
